Churros are delicious fried dough treats that are popular treats in Spain and Latin countries. They are typically dipped in chocolate sauce and sometimes filled with a caramel.

Churros

Ingredients:

2 ½ tablespoons granulated sugar
3/4 teaspoon salt

1 cup water
2 tablespoons vegetable oil
1 cup flour
Vegetable oil for frying (about 1 large bottle or more, depending on size of pot) Cinnamon sugar topping:

1/3 cup granulated sugar

1 teaspoon cinnamon

In a saucepan, combine the first 3 ingredients and bring to a boil. Remove from heat and add the flour and stir to make the dough. It should quickly combine to resemble a ball shape.

Place the dough in a piping bag or Ziploc baggie with the tip cut off. If using the piping system, use a star shaped tip.

Pipe the dough onto a plate in 5-inch long strips.

Heat the bottle of vegetable oil in a large pot. You may need more depending on the size of pot you use. Heat until the oil reaches 375F. You can check with a candy thermometer for best results.

Using a slotted spoon or tongs, gently place the dough strips into the oil and fry for about 3 minutes or until golden brown. Remove and place on a large plate lined with paper towels to absorb excess oil. Then quickly roll in the cinnamon sugar mix until coated.

Serve warm as is or with chocolate sauce.

Chocolate Sauce

Ingredients:

½ cup powdered baking chocolate
1 cup sugar

Pinch of salt
½ cup water
2 teaspoons vanilla

Combine the powdered chocolate, sugar and salt until well mixed. Add the water and bring to a boil over medium heat. Then, reduce to a simmer and stir constantly until well blended. Remove from heat. When cool, add vanilla.

The sauce will thicken as it cools.

Enjoy!
